John Harrison.

John Harrison(March 1693-March 1776)

A carpenter, a clockmaker. He studied physics and mechanical engineering by himself. He made a mechanical watch(chronometer) for the first time and invented the grasshopper escapement, a new form of deadbeat escapement for clocks.


Despite being a carpenter, he also made clocks using his skill. Time was the Age of Discovery. From the middle of the 15th century in Europe, ship collision and distress accidents occurred frequently in the sea. Latitude could be learned by measuring the height of the sun or the North Star poles, but there was no means to measure longitude, they could not know the location of their ship. So he aimed to make an accurate navigation clock and earn prize money. In order to solve the longitude problem, we developed a mechanical clock (chronometer). It was no doubt that the invention of his chronometer has played a great role in the British Empire in the 19th century, which was called the ruler of seven seas, the factory of the world. He lived till 83 years old.

大工でありながら、また、その技術を活かし、時計の製造を行った。時は大航海時代。ヨーロッパでは15世紀中ごろより、海での船の衝突・遭難事故が多発していた。緯度は太陽や北極星の高さを測ることで知ることができたが、経度を測る手段がなく、自分の船の位置を知ることができなかったためである。そこで彼は正確な航海時計を作って賞金を獲得することを目指した。経度の問題を解決させるために、機械式時計(クロノメーター)の開発をした。19世紀に7つの海の支配者、世界の工場と呼ばれた大英帝国が栄華を極めたのは、彼のクロノメーターの発明が一役を担っていたのは間違いない。彼は83歳まで生きた。

Water resistant.

Even waterproof watches should not be excessively exposed to the threat of water. If you operate the watch crown or button with moisture adhering, water enters inside the watch. If you take a bath while wearing a watch, ingredients such as steam, soap, hot springs will discolor and corrode the metal, and the packing will be deteriorated. If you wash your hands directly from the faucet, watering the watch causes waterproof failure because tap water has high water pressure. The watch is sometimes cloudy due to the temperature difference between the outside air and the inside of the watch. It will not be a problem if it is temporary. 防水時計であっても、過度に水の脅威に晒すことはさけなければならない。 水分が付着したまま、リューズやボタンを操作する。(時計内部に水が入る。)時計を着用したまま入浴する。(蒸気・石鹸・温泉の成分などが金属を変色・腐食させたり、パッキンの劣化を早める。)手を洗う際に直接蛇口から水をかける。(水道水は水圧が高いため、防水不良を引き起こす。) 外気と時計内部の温度差によりくもりが生じることがあるが、一時的なものであれば問題ない。
